About the Two Rivers Learning Institute
Who We Are
Two Rivers is a network of high-performing public charter schools located in Washington, DC. Our mission is to nurture a diverse group of learners to be lifelong, active participants in their own learning. As an EL Education school, our foundation is the qualities students need to be engaged thinkers and problem-solvers, caring community members, and compassionate members of society.
We believe that our mission is bigger than just the students who attend Two Rivers — instead, in order to reach the goals of public education, we need more collaboration among like-minded educators, schools, and districts.
We founded the Two Rivers Learning Institute to share some of the most promising instructional practices we’ve developed at Two Rivers.
We offer online tools and resources supporting our highlighted practices, as well as webinars, online courses, in-person workshops, and customized professional development opportunities.
Our Impact
We are proud to collaborate with educators and schools nationwide to share our project-based, hands-on approach focused on deeper learning outcomes.
The Two Rivers Institute was founded in 2020. In our first year, we were able to offer five virtual courses and eight individual webinars. We reached over 150 educators in over 50 schools.
In addition, we launched partnerships that included:
- Payne Elementary School in DC Public Schools to provide math training
- Propel Schools to provide training around diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies and strategic planning
- Los Angles Unified School Districts Office of Transition Services to provide support around student-led IEPs.
- The Social Justice School to provide training on teaching and assessing critical thinking skills
At Social Justice School, we believe that teachers grow when they have the opportunity to see a new teaching practice, and actually practice it in the session. The Two Rivers Learning Institute is powerful because it does just that! Teachers had the opportunity to engage with the thinking routines and to collectively create a plan to execute this practice in their lessons and during Crew. In addition, the Two Rivers Learning Institute is responsive to the needs of our teachers and always implemented the feedback that was provided.
